WINDOWS 7 TWEAK GUIDE

the-one1

After some pretty exhaustive research I was surprised at the lack of real tweaks and suggestions for Windows 7, so here’s your chance. Put your proven and personal tweaks in the comments section and I will add them to the article as a part of our Windows 7 Tweak Guide. Keep in mind that there are many suggestions on the WWW that are completely bogus.

ASK THE PROS 2009 Drivers and More Drivers

washington_dc_picturethumbnail1

Every week ASK THE PROS receives questions about drivers. They are not always the same but between looking for specific drivers and wanting to know how to find drivers, the questions mount up. A few weeks back I referenced our Drivers 101 offering. It comes with every DriverAlert subscription. It’s an excellent guide but there’s something missing. How do I save the drivers that are installed on my PC now?
That’s the question to start this month’s ASK THE PROS.

Windows 7 Beta Updates Available

micorosft-image

Starting Monday Feb. 24th 2009, updates are available for those lucky souls using Windows 7 Beta. The updates can be found by going to Start/All Programs/Windows Updates, as they are not being announced or installed via Automatic Updates. It must be done manually.

Reports that the updates don’t change anything and are only a “pseudo-refresh” seemed somewhat inaccurate. ”Starting February 24, we will be releasing up to 5 test updates to PCs running the Windows 7 Beta (Build 7000) via Windows Update. These updates allow us to test and verify our ability to deliver and manage the updating of Windows 7. We typically verify servicing scenarios during a beta”, said Brandon LeBlanc. Instead of the “up to 5” announced updates, I was presented with 35 suggested updates which downloaded and installed in approximately 25 minutes.

Some of these suggestions will change the security and functionality of Vista, so if your main interest is security, you may want to skip a suggestion. Before attempting any of these changes be sure to log in as “Administrator”.

To confirm the safety of these suggestions, I performed all these changes on my Gateway laptop with a brand new “from the factory install”. If you want this latest operating system to work like you know it should, then lets get started. I think

Trashed From The Factory Straight To Your Doorstep

Recently my focus has been on how the computer manufacturers are clogging our machines with boatware and craplets. My most recent look at this problem was disheartening to say the least. Instead of continuing to whine, I decided to see what I could do about the problem.

I started with a Sony VAIO VGN-NR185 laptop. The same one used in the From Bloat To Craplet article. This first laptop uses an Intel Core2 Duo 1.6 GHz processor and 1024 MB of memory. I’ve always liked the VAIO from Sony but the recent problem with craplets and Sony’s position on DRM has led me to safer alternatives. I wanted to see how much time it took to clear this machine of the headaches installed by Sony.
