Capitol Hill Targeted by Ransomware

It was bound to happen…

I’d like to say I’m shocked or appauled by this news, but I can’t.  It was only a matter of time before the hackers targeted the head of our nation’s government.

According to The Intercept, the ransomware attack was launched on Capitol Hill on April 30, 2016 via a phishing attack, targeting specifically the House Information Security Office.  It is unknown how many individuals opened and downloaded the file in the email scam, what information was affected or if the ransom was paid.

  1. The White House, despite being under cyber attacks daily, needs to educate their own staff better. The firewalls and security systems are only as good as the dork at the desk.
If they don’t have valid backups (like any idiot with a pulse should have), they’ll have to pay for their laziness…. then we’ll have to pay for the ineptitude. The very definition of PEBCAK

  2. It could happen to anyone. This is a gov’t office which means people working there would presume their info incoming would be pre-screened or such. I’m sure there will be many a meeting now to clarify that bugs can get through even the finest screen.

  3. i’m not shocked either. the usa has become “too big for it’s britches”, too arrogant and too many countries in this world would love to see it cut down to size and humbled.
