US Nukes Controlled by Floppy Disks

A recent 60 Minutes report exposed the fact that the US nuclear arsenal is controlled by ancient equipment – including 8 inch floppy disks.

People from all over the political spectrum are up in arms this week, following a 60 Minutes report on the state of the US nuclear arsenal. Particularly, the segment exposes the old and seemingly outdated technology that controls and underlies these most powerful of weapons. The phones are old, chunky physical types. The switch-boards have those big mechanical switches and flashy lights. And the paramount sin: Many of the records are kept on 8 inch floppy disks.

  1. Agree with Eagle and Don. Did a career in technology as well as MS in technology management. Americans simply don’t understand technology beyond their cutesy gadgets. And the media is only interested in putting on a show. And I still have a floppy reader and use it from time to time to read old data. Also excellent for tax records.

  2. Actually they run on a hybrid system of old and new tech. The older tech is better in some ways due to it’s harder tech to break scenario for the War machine that’s our nuclear arsenal. This has been shown before in the news so it’s not new news.

And sorry Don but as much as i, you and most of the world would like to see Nukes phased out all over the world, it is one of the things that keeps us a major world power. Or we would be speaking a different language right now. Nukes are as much a political thing as well as a weapon of mass destruction.

Though we have had a lot of silo’s moth balled and some have even been sold to the general public. I don’t believe this was a “just” article myself. This is just scare tactic’s, to get the billions it would cost us to get it fully upgraded. which won’t probably be happening any time soon. The Moneys would be funneled elsewhere in the War Machine.

  3. It would just as well if 60 Minutes had just shelved the program. Having been in the program years ago, age of equipment is not a factor as long as it works. I thought the Program was a ‘lead-in’ to do away with nuclear weapons. And it was clear that the lady knew nothing about technology. To do away with nuclear weapons is beginning of the end of the U.S. I was disgusted with the program. And the article written here reads just as stupid.
