Frighteningly Easy Way to Reset Windows Passwords

Resetting your Windows password is easy – that’s good — if you need access, bad — if you want to protect your PC.–PC Pitstop.

It turns out that resetting your Windows account password is frighteningly easy, as long as you have physical access to the machine.

When I set up my machine, I set a password for the Administrator account and then I promptly forgot it. I never use that account. Now, I need it. What can I do?
Do you have physical access to the machine? Can it boot from a CD or USB drive?

Good.

You can’t learn what the passwords are, but you can reset any Windows password on that machine that you like.

And if that doesn’t scare you, I really need to drive home a point.

  2. This article has a flaw in its logic. Windows passwords are not and have never been a method for keeping a computer secure. They are just a way of maintaining privacy from family and friends, and nothing more. There are three ways to set passwords for security. 1: Setting a BIOS password (Which does not work on a desktop because it can be reset by a motherboard jumper) will secure a notebook. Setting a hard disk password will work on any PC. Encrypting data with an encryption password will secure data on any PC.

    So, in the end, it doesn’t matter that there are free tools out there to reset Windows passwords. They are only a convenience to begin with.

    Yes, I have friend that gathers Laptops and computers from junk pickups etc. for recycling and charity. I get the job of getting passwords. Really some of the information there is frightening. I use a utility to write over the HDD so no information can be recovered if the machine is re-used.
