The map shows relative download speeds (by congressional district*) across the contiguous U.S., based on January through July data from over 5,600 cities and towns represented in Ookla’s Net Index. Blue means a faster download speed than the national average of 18.2 Mbps, while red means a slower download speed.

  12. The problem with maps of averages such as this is that they are of no practical use, except for showing averages across the large divisions of the country represented. Actual speeds attainable at any given location with any of those regions can vary widely within a distance of just a few miles, depending upon cable services available, distance from the serving central office, etc.
