Windows 7 Family Pack on the Way?

Bloggers Kristen Kenneay & Zdnet’s Ed Bott took a deep dive into Microsoft’s Windows 7 Home Premium EULA and found a clause that suggests you will be able to install one copy of the new operating system “on three computers in your household for use by people who reside there”.

At launch, Vista was offered with a similar ‘family pack’ option, but this alternative was short lived and was limited to those who had purchased or upgraded to the pricey Vista Ultimate.

No official word yet from Microsoft on this rumor or the next logical question — How much will the Family Pack cost?

However, if this multiple computer upgrade option holds true – it likely makes a Windows 7 upgrade an even more attractive idea for many.

  1. As I am reading this it is June 24,2011. Seems this post by pitstop is a little out of date as it was originated in July 2009. It would be nice if this is still in effect but I don’t think it is. You need to take this off your wed sit or update this item.

  2. my response is to Eric… you misunderstood what Dan S. had to say, maybe read it again…. he said $10 profit for each instead of $80, not pay $10 for each. He’s suggesting that maybe more copies would be sold and that the profit would be higher.

And then of course, less pirating too.

  3. Microsoft thought they really pulled a good
one on John Q Public,When they required a clean full load of windows 7 ultimate. Now how many are going to reload XP or Vista? Ha Ha
Now look at the price of a full version of windows 7 ultimate. Most don’t know how and
now John Q Public is screwed

  4. I USE KASPERSKY INTERNET SECURITY SUITE 2009. IT CAN BE INSTALLED ON 3 COMPUTERS PLUS A SMART PHONE. A 3 USER VERSION OF WINDOWS WOULD BE FANTASTIC BUT THERE IS BOUND TO BE A CATCH. WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE. HOPEFULLY THE PRICES THAT WE HAVE SEEN FOR A SINGLE LICENCE WILL BE THE SAME FOR A 3 USER VERSION. THIS COULD BE A GOOD WAY TO REDUCE PIRACY. MICROSOFTS WGA UPDATE WORKED FOR ALL OF A FEW HOURS BEFORE IT WAS HACKED BY THE PIRATES.

  5. i’ll bet its more than $150 for the 3 licence so all those people who didnt make use of the pre order price will be paying more but it’ll probably be less than buy 3 for full price maybe $240 the price of 2 full priced upgrades, a buy 2 get 3rd free kinda deal.

  6. Don S,

Yes I would rather pay $10 for each item than $80…but, the bottom line is how many more will they sell if they make the item that much cheaper. There is a balance point where a business has to determine where they will make the most profit…not where they will sell the most there product. Yeah I am sure they could sell windows for $5 a copy…but people will still use MAC OS or still pirate copies.

If you are not happy with the price, then don’t buy. It’s a free market and there are other choices out there….well it’s semi-free, the government likes to jump in every now and then.

  7. Given that the life of the average computer these days is no more than 3-5 years the operating system on any new PC should come with software that will upgrade free of charge for the life of that PC

  8. Windows 7 is definitely worth the trouble to upgrade.

BUT…. Microsoft (like the oil industry) needs to stop raping the American public and realize the economy is down the tubes… and if they’d drop the prices significantly, more than likely their bottom line would go up.

Personally, I’d rather sell 10 items making $10 profit each, rather than 1 item making $80 profit.

Otherwise, the prior comment is correct: Apple will gain another 3-5% of the market share.

  9. If its not offered, may not even using Windows 7, will use windows Vista only. Unless Microsoft stops sending out info on its other programs.

  10. @Arshan
Apple will lose 3-5% market share. Google will hit them with Chrome OS, and in case you haven’t noticed, even IT experts who had switched over are saying Windows 7 is as good as MacOS. They’ll be back.

  11. Amazing deal and the answer to my question. Don’t really want to pay $319 /$219 for 7 Ultimate full/upgrade for each of my two computers, but if I got to install it on each computer then it becomes a steal. I’d settle for the cheap pre-order pricing since I have multiple copies of vista/xp/2008 as an IT employee/student, but you can’t get a deal on ultimate. This would be one helluva deal and give me one more copy for a future computer.

  12. The family pack is the only way that I would consider upgrading all three of my computers unless I had no alternative.

  13. If microsoft did come out with this then for people like me that preordered 3 copies for my 3 computers to get the discount would get the short end of the stick when maybe one copy would be cheaper.
