In October 2008 wepc.com was introduced as a joint venture of ASUS and Intel to promote input for the worlds
first community designed PC. It appears this very novel concept is entering into a new phase and details are now being discussed regarding the much requested multiple screen and touch interface features.

As this process unfolds, it appears the forces behind this project are still committed to the community input that makes this idea so intriguing. The site is currently seeking additional ideas and comments.

  1. I’m a gamer, but also use my home pc for the usual gammuck of average tasks such as e-mail, creating documents, and various other tasks.

    Because I’m a bit of a hardware-junkie, I’d like to see a motherboard created for home-pc users that offers the option of installing multiple CPU’s. Take it beyond just multi-core, how about being able to attain server-like abilities with 2x quad-cores, let’s dream of at least 8 RAM slots waiting to take on the latest and fastest RAM currently available, and throw in 3x SLi all on one motherboard.

    What you could do with a motherboard like this would literally create a nearly endless string of possibilities, and leave a ton of head-room to upgrade over a much longer period of time, rather than every 2-3 yrs.

  4. Hardware development will happen regardless; any one of us can put together a wishlist of existing hardware. I want to see usability improvements from a design perspective, like solid-state drives that compare both in terms of price and performance to spindle drives. Better yet, why not an EEPROM to hold the OS on the board itself? Linux LiveCDs can already load the whole OS into RAM, and commodity boards can hold anywhere from 8-16GB DDR2 or up to 24GB DDR3; why not do away with storage devices (i.e. hard drives and SSDs) for the OS entirely?

    Also, I’d personally like to see FBDIMMS either come down in price to something more reasonable or increase in speed to justify the cost (if not become completely obsolete due to both AMD and Intel now putting the MCH on the CPU). And in a contribution to my bang-for-the-buck method of building machines, AMD and Intel need to stop using different sockets for their server and desktop processors; they make their money on the CPU, not the board. My Q6600 runs 3.6GHz stable/3.82 bench; just imagine 2 of them in one board.

    My system runs flawlessly with no trouble at all and is perfect for gaming and work related areas. Best of all it is very quiet, so quiet I could even hear my air purifier working and I filled my case with extra fans by thermaltake. If your in a budget and want a dream system these here products will suit you well. You might want to spend more money on the Video Cards and upgrade to the new nVidia XFX GeForce GTX 285 Black Edition Video Card for extreme gaming. I do not overclock because there is no need to period but I did try it and is amazing.

  6. Make the os only require one keystroke to sign off. Always start up the way you did the last time you logged on. Have the os on a flash disk and reload the system anytime it contacts a suspected viros. In the previous reboot remember all the original user options. never give the user numbered error messages instead options to correct the problem. Always give the user options to solve the problem not something like consult help.

  7. A dream computer… Since I would rather live life than play games, this luddite would rather use my computer as a work horse, art workshop and concert player.
    So my ideal computer would have to be more portable, environmentally sustainable, and universally accessible to purchase components. It would also work anywhere on the globe!
    My ideal would be a thin, light portable computer with a 100% recyclable outer cabinet -aluminum is my choice of metal, bamboo would be my choice of vegatable material at this point in time. All materials would be reclaimable in the recycling depots. No toxic heavy metals would be used in it. For the consumer-oriented vegetable biodegradable skins would be available to express your creative side.
    It would be thin, less than 1.2 cm thick and you could purchase the size you need by considering the components you want to run. Gamers would go large and photo tourists and word processors go small.
    This system would have plug and play round the rim for every function you need. Upgrade as new technology replaces old. No more shipping off entire unit for a warranty item repair. The company diagnostics verify crappy component and ship replacement part. Owner should be able to snap out part and snap in new part. No more crappy customer service rep from around the world who cannot speak your language which prevents sharing of information.
    The top lid would have a sliding screen like a moon roof on a vehicle so you could have a screen that is legible because of the sun’s light/ room light not another power sucking bulb. (and avoid the failing screen in current laptops)
    I would put the battery at the back fold (as is now the case) and have battery systems that you can interchange for the battery back up you need. The battery may extend beyond the case when you put in the “longflight” battery. This is for stability and to keep the battery from over heating the computer. You would be able to quickly and easily replace battery packs as you go. It would also have the option of solar power hook up to an external system for basic internet functions such as radio, weather and news feeds. You could recycle the battery packs or have depot contracts for battery replacements.
    This computer would use less power than current components of today. Since nothing would produce heat other than the tuning of the cd/dvd/mp3/blueray/future??? discs,all power would go directly to work rather than as waste heat. I do believe that wires and electric components will become obsolete as fibers and chips continue to develop. Wireless connectivity will be improved with all peripherals.
    Since I am living in a dream world on this uberpaper, the costs would be a la carte so you pay for what you want and can upgrade your system at any time. Like an antique, your old case would grow more valuable especially if made of a valued metal. It’s a new way of keeping old and new together. A bamboo case would be sufficient and replaceable for the fashionistas. With this system just about anyone interested in owning a computer can own one. For others several dedicated computers would be advantageous: a banking computer, a security computer, a game computer, etc. Some simple adjustments would be the opportunity for ‘mouse’ on the left or right handside of the base unit. Artists could use a stylist to draw right on the screen when designing. Voice and finger print recognition would be security features. Wrong finger print equals no access. The voice processing would be much improved: you could write the next great novel by dication and then edit, edit, edit by keyboard and voice recognition.
    Computersgeeks need to lead the way in energy efficiency and recyclability. As for stirring a drink and mowing the lawn with a COMPUTER… I am grateful for fresh drinking water which should not be going on a lawn… time for the world to stop mowing and fertilizing wastefully… take up xeriscaping or permaculture.
    Thinner, faster, nontoxic, recyclable and renovatable with components, and affordable. It’s a slice!

  8. I want to have a computer that can handle gaming and video to the point where it looks so vivid and real, that when i play a game, i won’t be able to tell if i’m awake or dreaming and a system that handles files at break-neck speeds.

    i want to see a 3 dimentional interactive operating system with an interactive artificial intelligence that i can have a conversation/argument with and will also interact to voice commands.

    i want a split keyboard that i can place on the tip of the arm rests on my chair at my desk and not a conventional keyboard, but, a holographic type interface (think minority report).

    i want the screen to be holographic and see through and i want the box to be no larger than a modern laptop.

  9. I would like to say the concept behind these small efficient computers, was not that appetizing to me until I purchased my Asus EeePC. This little machine has a fast internet connection, decent gaming capabilities, and smooth processes. I think the idea behind the design of this mini machine is more functional than it has previously given credit for. I would like to see the direction of the functional mobile Pc industry to move into the direction of more media and wireless information retrieval to be faster and more efficient than it currently is.I think that If the Industry could produce a more battery and space efficient Pc without sacrificing casual performance NOT the HARDCORE amenities of Gaming machines its just simple not for that audience of individuals.

    Simply it comes down to a few components that need to see change.
    Improvements for Integrated On-Board Video memory for the smaller mobile Pc’s.
    More memory as a standard from say the 1gig. standard now to 1.5gigs.
    And one of the most important components of the mobile machine Increase to the Power Saving While operating and a time increase in battery life.

  10. I’d like to see a computer with today’s hardware, but uses less power. It seems like every year the “new” PC requires a larger PSU (My last one was a 400W, my new one is now a 550W…it’s ridiculous) that, while putting out better graphics and crunches numbers faster than ever, destroys my wallet in electrical costs (Not to mention the environmental hazards).

    There must be a way to maintain awesome graphics but lower their power consumption. It’s all about energy efficiency. I’m really impressed with the way that PSUs have become increasingly efficient (Say, upwards of 80% vs. upwards of 65%)…and I’m sure the same can be done with other pieces of hardware.

    The reason this is rather important to me is because eventually we’re going to hit a point where our normal computers use an ungodly amount of power, and it’ll no longer be practical to even run a gaming machine in your house.

I may be a bit off-topic, but, I can only conclude that, after reading the existing thoughts for the community-designed PC, the responses stay “within the box”, meaning that the design potential of each machine is strictly limited to those existing devices built into it. Also, the contemporary nature of the machine is finite. The machine’s design condemns it to being obsolete before it is powered on.

    Rather, I would remove the “within the box” thinking from design and conceive of a “Universal Bus”/Architecture machine.

    To me, a truly futuristic computer concept should not include design and construction around existing component capabilities. That approach takes the design and makes it finite.

    Rather, the machine must have designed into it the ability to be “morphed” into the new technologies of the time.

    That is accomplished by building a standardized “rack” type “Universal Bus” computer. It would consist of nothing more than a series of slots for: power supplies, “rack” management, motherboard(s), RAM, disk, Networks (wired & wireless), etc., etc., etc.

    The machine would not have wires and etchings, as we understand their use today. Rather, it would make use of fiber and wireless for all bus, board and component communications. One fiber strand would replace 32 or 64 or more data and address channels. There are no EMF or RF or temperature issues. However, there may be size and power issues for the form-factors, unless some universal “rack-management” technology can be developed to accommodate it.

    The rack-mounted approach exists, today, at the commercial level. It would be only a small step to include the ordinary private/individual consumer in this arena.

    The downside would be some degree of retooling to “standardize” existing components into a new form-factor for the ordinary consumer.

    The upside would be maintenance and upgrade ease, retention of existing technology during/after upgrading, much lower costs of computer hardware upgrades since replacing only a single board may complete the total upgrade.

    As for the computing industry, this approach may greatly help the consumer while potentially hurting the industry, overall. Since upgrades would involve only a single board, that helps the consumer.

    While upgrades would involve only a single board, that potentiall hurts the industry since everything existing in the “rack” from screws & washers, cabinetry, cabling, hard drives, etc., would not have to replaced during an upgrade, as it would be when currently upgrading a laptop/desktop/tower computer machine. That could be a significant portion of PC manufacturing which would no longer be needed, along with the associated jobs. Not Good !

    In closing, the topic of developing a standardized “Universal Bus”/Architecture machine probably just makes for interesting conversation.

  12. Id like to see a computer that had a programming set up with the connections to be adaptable to various “robotic” functions. Imho, this wouldnt be that difficult, if it were set up from the begining. robot vaccuums have already been built with built in ability to learn their environment. a version that included a pair of arms with “gloved” (grabbers with multiple spring hinged and padded “fingers”) ends, could aid in picking up things when ran from a computer.

    a person that wasnt completely physically able (such as someone in a cast or other handicap) could tell the computer what to do, so it wouldnt need to be that “smart”

    the same set up could be used to mow the grass or other things. the operator would be in control, so it wouldnt need to have a fully functional ai program, just one that could aid the operator by doing the fine things such as keeping the mower in a line when the operator told it to go in a line, or to handle the actual movement commands for the pick up device.

    there are a lot of functions that could be used, if there was a set of commands and connections that was intuitive to use, or even had a tutorial to help. a lot of people could be able to design and sell attachments that could make the computer completely a home tool.

  13. I agree with Mr. Davis.

    While all the latest and greatest hardware is nice such as Solid state drives and the GTX 295’s, a lot of people can’t afford to put 5-6 grand into a computer. Most new games have yet to take advantage of 3+ processors so most dual core’s suffice. Don’t get me wrong, I love the feeling of having a computer that can make the lights dim all over the country side, but most of the time a budget build for around 2-3 grand will be good enough for at least 3+ years. and if your crafty enough your budget system will be upgradeable so in 2 years you’ll have the $10,000 system from 2 years ago.

I’d like to see you build something that takes advantage of all of the newer, better, cheaper technology…64 bit, multi-core processor, 4000 Mh/s front-side bus speed motherboards with gigabit ethernet, a network card, multiple x16 PCI-x 2.0 graphics cards (the new ones have huge amounts of RAM…!!)running a set of big flatscreens. A nice 5.1 sound system. Terrabyte hard drives in a RAID set-up.
    It would be nice if you kept it on a budget that is affordable for the home enthusiast, two thousand or twenty-five hundred dollars would be good.
