Registry Cleaning Tool Removed From PC Matic Default

Effective immediately, PC Matic will be removing the registry cleaning from the default version of its security software.  The option will remain within PC Matic; however, in order to use it, subscribers will need to enable the feature.  Step-by-step instructions on how to do so, are provided at the end of this article.

It is still encouraged users clean their registries for the following reasons:

  • The registry holds details about every piece of your computer.
  • Things are added to the registry daily.  Unfortunately outdated things are rarely, if ever removed.  That is unless the user does it themselves.
  • It’s good PC maintenance.

Why Remove It?

PC Matic CEO, Rob Cheng, states,

“PC Pitstop’s first product was Optimize and it included many Windows optimization features, including registry optimization.  It is these features that were wrapped into PC Matic, which over a decade later performs maintenance on millions of computers.

There is a lingering question in the software industry.  How important is registry cleaning?  I have personally fixed hundreds of computers using PC Matic.  In certain instances the computer behaved remarkably better, and the only thing I could attribute the improvement to was registry cleaning.    Since Optimize was introduced in 2004, our products have cleaned tens of billions of registry entries and keys.  My view has always been that there is some marginal, though at times unquantifiable benefit, to registry cleaning and best we can tell there is no downside to the customer.

Recently, Bleeping Computer when analyzing the quality of our security also included a concern about our continued use of registry cleaning.  Part of the Malwarebytes’ justification for PC Matic’s PUA categorization was registry cleaning.  For these reasons, we have decided to remove default registry cleaning in PC Matic and PC Matic Pro.  The reason is that registry cleaning is distracting our message of superior security made in America.  From our humble roots of a simple registry cleaner, we have evolved into an industry leading security solution.”

Impact on Current Customers

For current customers, any scans moving forward will not have the registry cleaning feature implemented.  If you would like your registry to be cleaned, you will need to enable the tool.  To do so, you will need to open PC Matic, and click on “Master Scheduler” as shown below.

If you’re using your PC Matic license for multiple PCs, you will want to select which you’d like to enable this feature for.  Or you may “Select All” on the top right.  Then click “Schedule” on the bottom right of the screen.

The registry clean option defaults to “Off”.  To turn it on, you will need to click on the drop down arrow by “Clean Registry”.  By turning the feature on you will have the registry cleaning feature enabled again.

If you do not see the “Clean Registry” option, you will need to close PC Matic and open Internet Explorer (IE).  Once IE is open, clear your cache.  You can do so by pushing Ctrl+Shift+Delete.  Once this is done, open PC Matic and follow the instructions above.  Now when you access the screen below, you should see the registry cleaning option.

Be sure to click “Save” to ensure any edits made are saved for future scans.

  1. Very Nice Site!

I am a user of your product on an old Dell laptop, running Win 10. My security had been through Symantic products. I downloaded your product and installed it! Then I removed as much of my Norton AV as I could. I have a small problem understanding people, in India, with the accent they have explaining online. I’d be more relaxed, knowing a fellow U.S. Citizen, and taxpayer, was on the other side of my help! My question is this: Does PC Matic, want to work with an A.V. program, or will it conflict with it?

    • PC Matic is an anti-virus solution, so theoretically you don’t need to run another AV solution. You can if you’d like, but since we function with a whitelist technology and others use a blacklist, it’s best to use one methodology. I’d advise to use PC Matic on its own for simplicity, but if you’d like confirmation on a specific collaboration between our solution and another, feel free to reach out to our support team at http://www.pcmatic.com/help.

  2. I have had PC Matic for a long time and it has served me well. Thanks for putting the notice on face book. I did what you described to do and turned on the registry cleaner. I always tell my friends to get PC Matic. Thanks for taking care of my computers.

  3. I picked up a PC-Matic CD from a cash register rack at a Circuit City store so long ago, I don’t like to think about it. I think I paid $9.95 or something like that for it. Although, I have migrated to Linux for myself, I still use it on the wife and stepson’s computers. I confess that I use it in conjunction with Malwarebytes and Adaware for cleanup routines. None of them catch everything, but as a group, they weed out an awful lot of stuff. I have always been pleased with PC-Matic and during the full moon and other times when the crazy’s see prevalent, I engage Supershield for my wife. Otherwise we use the Mfg (Microsoft) program du jour. I won’t be cancelling my subscription anytime soon. You’ve always treated me right when I asked for help.

    • There is no additional cost associated with reinstating the registry cleaner. It has just been disabled from the default settings. So anyone who has PC Matic, or buys it in the future, will have the ability to enable it with the instructions within the article.

  4. can I download on my iPad and then it will to my desktop computerI need some kind of help with the desktop and this sounds like it’s a good thing to have

    • PC Matic is only compatible with Windows Vista, XP, 7, 8 10 and Android. Unfortunately, it does not work on Apple devices. I am uncertain what operating system you have on your desktop, but if you are using Windows, we would be compatible with that. If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out.

      Thank you!

  5. I removed malwarebytes free from my computer. Everytime I ran it I continued to get notice of 10 pups virus which I would quarantine. These appeared to come from the pcpitsop. I don’t know if I did the right thing or should reinstall malwarebytes, or something else.

    • Anthony, Malwarebytes was detecting PC Matic as a PUP for a short period of time however they have now reclassified it as safe. You may need to update your Malwarebytes definitions which should allow the programs to run together peacefully.
