HUD Breaches Leave Thousands Exposed
National Mortgage News reported the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) suffered two major breaches in August and September. The first resulted in over 50,000 leaked records, and the second, over 420,000 records. The exposure was through the department’s website, where this private information was inadvertently made public.
The individuals whose information was compromised, received a letter in November disclosing the details of the breach, along with free credit monitoring services for a year.
There are no reports of the data being used inappropriately at this time; however, it certainly could occur in the future. This is why all impacted individuals are encouraged to utilize the free credit monitoring services being offered. To do so, users must enroll no later than March 31, 2017.
