   I've not noticed the cost of wi-fi in Europe being noticeably worse than in the States – in fact free wi-fi is arguably more widespread – but the cost of Skype phones outside the US is inexplicably a fraction of the $130-150 quoted here.

   I think a better answer is to pick up HP net book witch has the built in camera, mic, speakers and wifi. I got one for $200 on the internet. For under $10 you can add blue tooth to it for those private conversations in a public place.

   One other problem with the portables is they normally use a special battery. I had owned the one made by Linksys (WIP320) and you no longer can get a battery for it. By using a Netbook you have the video also. If you are using other type services like Yahoo messenger or Google Talk then the Net Book will take care of all your needs. To improve performance replace the memory strip with a 2gig.

   You all are missing one point,,, you have to have a connection.
   It's like having a car but no gas. Useless, if you can't get a signal or need a code to connect to the site

   Don your point was not missed. On the video Chris pointed out that WiFi access is all over the place, many of them are open. Coffee shops and even McDonalds has WiFi now. If you stay in a motel you will most likely find a connection. Take a WiFi laptop into a food court you will most likely get a connection. It is understood the Skype is not a cell phone. However many cell phones can now do Skype on the data network or WiFi of the Cell phone if present. My HTC cell phone can do it. This by itself is another reason why a stand alone phone that can only do one function, may not be the best idea. What they are missing is the video and TXT ability. There is one made my Asus that has video, but is large and will only last 20 mins on a charge. It is more then the price of a mini network pc and still can not do TXT. Think of its use like a pay phone, you just might have to go there to use it. When you find it the call is free.
